Community and volunteering

At Mitie, we’re always striving to give back to the communities we serve and to deliver social value at every opportunity.

Whether our teams are providing employment opportunities to underrepresented groups or donating thousands of volunteer hours to UK charities, we’re dedicated to tackling the issues that affect society – from environmental concerns to the rising cost of living.

Our Giving Back programme

Giving Back provides our salaried colleagues ten hours a year to support local causes they care about, join charity events and dedicate their talents to the community. This adds up to tens of thousands of hours supporting what really matters every year.

Through Giving Back, we’ve developed close partnerships with numerous national charities including the British Heart Foundation, Career Ready and Macmillan Cancer Support. And we’ve pledged to double our efforts, committing to 2,000 volunteering days a year by 2025.

‘We Are One Mitie’ isn’t just a core value; it’s the essence of our relationships with colleagues, partners, and communities. Our commitment to Giving Back is our heartfelt expression of gratitude to the communities we serve.

The BIG Mitie Spring Clean

Every year our colleagues spend thousands of hours supporting environmental initiatives, including The BIG Mitie Spring Clean. In June 2023, our annual cleaning event saw us spend 1,580 hours collecting rubbish from parks, cities and beaches across the UK, creating healthier and more attractive environments for wildlife and the community to enjoy.

Essex forests

Our work with the Essex Forest Initiative dates back to 2022, when our volunteers planted 1,600 trees on Canvey Island. In 2023, we joined forces with local businesses to plant a further 6,000 trees in Basildon. These projects help improve local air quality, provide habitats for wildlife, encourage biodiversity and maintain a healthy ecosystem. Each tree contributes to Essex County Council’s five-year goal of planting 375,000 trees by the end of 2024.

Food redistribution

Food redistribution is essential as the cost of living crisis forces more and more UK households to skip meals and go hungry. In 2023, Mitie joined the fight against food poverty, supporting 25 food redistribution centres across the country with 1,000 volunteering hours.

The Mitie Foundation

The Mitie Foundation was established in 2013 to help disadvantaged candidates explore new life opportunities and break down barriers to employment. For over a decade, the Foundation has supported the long-term unemployed, those with disabilities, Forces veterans, ex-offenders and young people. So far, almost 500 people have completed our Ready2Work programme – and 70% of those have gained employment as a direct result.
